Biometric Experience Privacy and Consent Notice

About

The Biometrics Experience project is an ANA initiative aimed at improving the quality of service and the airport experience for passengers.

The "Biometric Experience by VINCI Airports" is an innovation project, supported by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU programme, which focuses on the application of technology to improve the quality of service at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada airports.

The project was launched at the beginning of the year in Lisbon and Porto airports and, in the second half of 2024, the technological solution will be available in Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada. The first tests are being carried out with TAP Air Portugal passengers on departures from Lisbon and Porto airports, on flights previously selected by the company, in the Schengen area - Europe. In a second phase, other airlines and more destinations will be added, including extra-European flights.

This technology is at the forefront of the most innovative boarding procedures at airports around the world and is part of a major investment by VINCI Airports in its network, with a project already underway since 2022 at Lyon airport. This is a commitment to improving the quality of service and the passenger experience.

Who can use this service?

Signing up to this identification process is optional and voluntary.

In a first phase, this facility is available on designated intra-EU (Schengen) flights, for passengers who hold a citizen's card, electronic passport and are of legal age.

Passengers on the test flights who are eligible (only passengers of legal age can use biometric data) can take part by registering on their mobile device using the "Biometric Experience by VINCI Airports" app, available on IOS and Android. It's a simple and quick process!

Alternatively, passengers can register at the airport, on a device available for this purpose, located at check-in, in the public departures area in Lisbon and Porto, or next to the boarding gates for passengers transferring between flights, at self-registration kiosks or assisted counters.

How it works

Registration and use are simple:

In the app, simply photograph/scan your boarding pass, electronic passport and take a selfie, accepting the terms and conditions

At the kiosk, simply photograph/scan your boarding pass, electronic passport or portuguese nationality card and take a selfie, accepting the terms and conditions.

The boarding experience will be easier and faster thanks to the digitisation of your biometric data, without you having to present your boarding pass again.

This solution uses advanced algorithms to confirm the identity of the person travelling and the name on the boarding pass with the photo and name on their ID document (citizen card or electronic passport).

Using this facility, passengers no longer have to repeatedly present physical or digital identity documents and proof of ticket throughout their journey.

Joining to this identification process is optional and voluntary and requires passengers to enrol/register using the mobile registration app, at self-registration kiosks or at assisted counters: a simple process that only takes 1 minute.

Privacy and Consent Notice

This project is a collaboration between ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal ("ANA") and the Airlines involved. We are strongly committed to protecting your privacy and personal data. This Privacy Policy sets out how your personal data will be processed and protected within the scope of the initiative, allowing participants to check baggage, access security control and board the aircraft using facial recognition.

Participation in this process is voluntary and open to participants who fulfil the following requirements:

- only for participants over 18 years old;

- The participant has an electronic passport or a Portuguese national ID card.

ANA and the Airlines will act in accordance with data protection laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation. As part of this process, ANA will process personal data on behalf of the Airlines, which act as data controllers for the passenger/participant.

Personal Data Required

If you participate, ANA collects your personal data allowing you to enroll, after which you will be able to cross the included processes using your biometric data.

The Process consists of three steps

1. The participant must enroll at the registration mobile application, kiosk or manual counter

2. The participant will be able to be identified by means of facial recognition where available in the airport

3. The participant boarding pass data will be shared to the applicable airline when completing bag drop and/or boarding processes in line with current standards and requirements

All of these steps require the storage and use of personal data during the process to ensure the integrity of the process. This includes the following data:

Identity document

The identity document (electronic passport or citizen's card) is scanned to ensure that it belongs to the holder of the passport by comparing a photo of your face with the photo in the document. It is also used to ensure that the participant presenting themselves is the same person seeking to use the boarding pass for the purpose of boarding the aircraft operated as per the operator.

Boarding pass

The boarding pass is scanned to see whether you have a valid ticket for the relevant flight. The data is used at bag drop (if applicable) to update the passenger details with the airline of the bag being delivered by the passenger. For the security access control, the boarding pass data is used to ensure it is a valid document to cross to the airside of the airport (security processes must still be performed). Finally, the data is used to process the passenger boarding process by the airlines.

Biometric facial data

Upon enrolment at the registration application, kiosk or desk, your photo is taken for identification in the next steps of the process. This photo is saved in template form only. The visible picture and the identifying characteristics of your face are only viewed for the purpose of confirming it is the same as the person presented in the associated identity document. When crossing the included process (e.g. boarding), another photo is taken, which is converted to a template form and subsequently used to identify you. ANA collects your personal data only for the purposes of performing the processes included in this process.

Only the necessary information will be processed and, if necessary, shared with the authority in accordance with current requirements, namely boarding pass data with the airline. Identity document and biometric data are mainly used to complete the manual checks that airlines are obliged to carry out.

The purpose

ANA and the Airlines are constantly working to improve travel processes at the airport in order to make the travel experience as smooth and pleasant as possible.

The objectives are:
- Enhance the passenger experience
- Remove duplication of repeatedly showing travel documents
- Simplify the airport processes
- Enhance security leveraging biometrics and AI
- Support the airline agent manual tasks to focus on customer experience

ANA processes and stores your personal data on behalf of the Airline, only in so far as it is strictly necessary for achieving the stated purposes and all personal data is deleted from the system after flight departure.

Protecting your personal data

ANA adopts appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against loss or any form of unlawful processing. For example, all servers and other storage media are equipped with physical and software security. Access to your data is limited to those employees who are directly involved in the process and with legitimate needs.

Your rights

ANA attaches great value to transparency. We therefore believe that you must be able to identify which personal data ANA collects and processes for the purposes of this process at any time.

The process is based on voluntary participation. At the start of the enrolment, you give your personal consent for the use of your data. You can terminate your participation at any point during the enrolment process. In such case, all data will be erased.

All biometric data that we collect for the purposes of enabling the process will be erased in full no later than 24 hours after taking the photo during enrolment.

Water supply management.

Water is a precious resource that is becoming scarcer and scarcer. Water quality is essential for the pursuit of human activities and maintaining biodiversity, progressively threatened by global warming.

Responsible management of this resource is a strategic priority for the environmental management system at ANA airports. The company uses smart metering to manage and control water consumption in the airport facilities. This includes restaurants, sanitary facilities, irrigation of green spaces, washing vehicles, pavements and buildings, as well as consumption associated with firefighting drills. At ANA airports, the water supply comes from specialised suppliers and/or own facilities.

Also of note is how the company monitors the quality of water for human consumption, aimed at ensuring the health of users of all ANA airports and improving consumption efficiency.

Therefore, the company began the Water Footprint project in 2011, placing itself in the forefront in comparison to other national companies, as was the case with the Carbon Footprint. Using and adaptation of the methodology presented in The Water Footprint Assessment Manual”, ANA calculated the water footprint of its airports up to 2015.

Currently, as has already been done for the energy area, ANA has started carrying out water audits in the different airports it manages.

Pursuing the aim of reducing consumption and increasing water efficiency, the company has highlighted some of the many measures and projects implemented and underway:

• Because of the rainfall in the islands, artificial irrigation of the green areas at the airports is rarely needed?

• In the green areas at Ponta Delgada Airport, we plant species adapted to the region according to their lower water needs? 

Did you know that at Faro Airport...

• We dry wash our vehicles, which gives an average 85% reduction of water consumption compared to conventional washing?

• A project aimed at reusing the water from washing aircraft and testing the Airport Firefighting Service vehicles is under development, aimed at reducing water consumption? This Portuguese project is a candidate for the VINCI Environment Award?

• In the green areas at Faro Airport, we plant species adapted to the region according to their lower water needs?

• We give the water from the noria (waterwheel) at Faro Airport to Algarve University for use in the Ramalhete Research Station for breeding seahorses and other species of fish of commercial interest (sea bream , turbot, etc.) in captivity?

Did you know that at Lisbon Airport...

• We receive data via WATERBEEP (contract with EPAL) that also allow us to detect anomalous consumption and act rapidly in the event of disruption of the water supply network?

• We are adapting the system created at Porto Airport, which comprises reusing the water used during testing of the pumping system of the firefighting vehicles, for use in the future Lisbon Airport fire station, where rainwater will also be reused?

• In the green areas at the airport, we plant species adapted to the region according to their lower water needs?

• We have optimised watering of the green areas on the ground side of the airport using the Trigger system, with virtual sensors that control the humidity according to soil conditions and the real needs of the plants, permitting average savings of 30%?

• We have implemented EPAL's ultrasound WONE system, which allows leaks in the water supply network to be detected and resolved and reduces water consumption by around 43%?

• We water almost 90% of the green spaces at Beja Airport using the drop-by-drop system?

Did you know that at the Madeira airports...

• In the green areas at Madeira Airport, we plant species adapted to the region according to their lower water needs?

• We have channelled the runoff water from the runway and the parking apron at Porto Santo Airport to the reservoir, located in an area close to the airport? This is the largest irrigation water storage structure on the island. The reservoir water, as well as water from other sources, is used for watering the landscaped areas in the airport and in other parts of the island.

• We have installed a drop-by-drop watering system in the green areas at Madeira airport?

• The green spaces at Madeira Airport are partially watered using water from the “levadas” – irrigation channels that guide the available water from the highest places to lower lying land?

Did you know that at Porto Airport...

• We reuse the water collected from the disposal points for bottles of liquids near the security checkpoint for cleaning and watering in the airport?

• We were able to reduce water consumption by 40% thanks to a system that allows some of the water used for testing the pumping system on firefighting vehicles to be reused? This project won the VINCI Innovation Award and is being replicated in other airports.

• We have reduced the water used for flushing toilets by 75% by using a vacuum drainage system?

ANA’s activities generate three different types of effluents:

•  effluent from run-off from paved areas, potentially contaminated with hydrocarbons – rainwater;
•  effluent from the containment of spillages and domestic wastewater;
•  domestic wastewater.

To deal with rainwater, which has a higher potential impact, systems are being installed for pre-treating the water before it is discharged into public collectors or the water environment. Thus, albeit not exhaustively, there are hydrocarbon separators on the aircraft parking aprons, the vehicle refuelling areas and in the garages and workshops.

Over the last decade, ANA has been investing in improving the wastewater and rainwater drainage systems at its airports, in some cases remodelling the existing networks (Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Ponta Delgada and Horta) and introducing programmes for monitoring the quality of the wastewater, rainwater and the run-off produced.

The effluent produced by the company is sent to the following places:

•  Porto and Beja airports: Own wastewater treatment plants, with one being in the implementation phase at Ponta Delgada Airport;
•  Lisbon and Faro airports: connection to the municipal collector;
•  Santa Maria Airport: connection to a septic tank followed by a filtering trench run by the Municipal Council;
•  Flores and Horta airports: septic tank followed by an absorption tank operated by ANA.

The results obtained from the monitoring programmes underway showed that, in the case of some wastewater, rainwater and run-off, the parameters established by law have been fully complied with at ANA airports.

Energy, Carbon and Climate Change

Introduction Energy projects at ANA Voluntary carbon management

Fighting climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 20th century. The environmental, economic and social impacts associated with it are increasingly recognised as a reality by the different sectors of society, including governments, the business sector and citizens. It is vital to act quickly, both in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions an in the adaptation to the consequences.

ANA recognised its role in this area over and decade ago and we are working to readapt airport infrastructure in order to achieve lower energy consumption and reduce emissions of these gases to the atmosphere.

There are four main sources of energy consumption at ANA:

•  The Passenger Terminal, including lighting and other passenger support services;

•  Air conditioning and heating;

•  Operational services specific to the airport sector;

•  Administrative services and operational support.

Pursuing the aim to reduce energy consumption, increase efficiency and promote the transition to renewable sources, ANA airports have implemented, or are in the process of implementing a number of initiatives.

• Omniflow Lighting System - replacement of lighting in outdoor public areas with intelligent units with energy generation and storage capacity:

• Eco Generador – a gigantic power bank with solar panels and aerogenerators to provide electricity in areas without electrification:

• Free Cooling – Economical method to assist in the cooling of the passenger terminal, installed at Faro Airport

• Airport Emergency exercise by Teams – Remote electronic platform for developing and holding emergency drills

• Variable Flow Hot Water Heating Systems – Higher yield air conditioning system installed at Lisbon Airport

• Electric Ambulifts for PRM's – Electric Ambulifts for Embarkation and Disembarkation of Passengers with Reduced Mobility at Madeira and Ponta Delgada airports.

• Greenway 4 PRMs – Replacement of diesel vehicles with electric buggies for driving Passengers with Reduced Mobility to distant stands.

•LEDs in runway light systems - Replacement of the light systems on runways and taxiways with LED technology

• Energy efficiency in lighting - Replacement of electric spotlights with LED lighting in one of the premium areas at Lisbon Airport.

• Bicycle assembly area for passengers – Promoting the use of bicycles as a preferred, zero emission means of transport, thus contributing to green tourism and preserving nature in the region.

• ANA Green Fleet – Policy of acquiring electric vehicles, aimed at having a more environmentally sustainable fleet.

• Airport EV Charging Stations - Charging stations for electric vehicles in the car parks.

• Bicycle racks – Construction of a bicycle park in order to promote the use of bicycles when travelling to and from the airport.

• Monitoring Aircraft Carbon footprint – Real time monitoring of carbon emissions and fuel consumption during surface movement of aircraft.

• Energy Efficiency Automated – Automation of systems to minimise energy consumption in the airport terminal – a project by the Lisbon Airport Building Management System (BMS).

• We Use Well – Water consumption monitoring system in the ANA airports network.

• Green generator - Replacement of petrol generators with electric generators on the maintenance vehicles for lighting systems.

In line with the European goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, ANA has undertaken to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality (net zero) in 2050.

All ANA airports have been accredited by the ACI Europe Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme since 2010. This is a global programme aimed at carbon management in airports, which assesses and recognises the efforts made in monitoring and reducing CO₂ emissions through six certification levels: Mapping, Reduction, Optimisation, Neutrality, Transformation and Transition. Current, ANA airports have Level 2 accreditation (reduction).

Focusing on cost control, ANA calculates the company's overall carbon footprint (head office and by airport) each year, including direct and indirect emissions, analysed since 2008 according to the emissions categories listed below.

Adaptation to Climate Change

The world is changing. Global warming is one of the greatest environmental, economic and social threats. Apart from the measures already implemented and planned in the short term, optimising energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ANA is taking the necessary steps to adapt its network of airports to the new demands, prioritising the need to make this infrastructure resilient to climate change.
